Despite its impregnability, a section of the Jiuyongguan Wall was actually breached by Genghis Khan in 1211 – 1213. As it is the closest section to the wall to Beijing, it’s a popular destination for tourists who come to walk to its top and visit its fairy – tale fortress.

The Dinglin Tombs are nearby, and the area is well worth a visit to photograph some of its wonderful scenery. Gubeikou is about two hours from Beijing and is home to one of China’s most famous mosques, the only Imperial Ming Mosque that can open and close by itself.
